Description

The two volumes, a result of the excellent collaboration between the two institutions, present through their one hundred and seven texts the latest findings in the field of Medieval and Modern Mediterranean ceramics. The keynote speech offers a synthesis of the progress made over the last twenty years in the field of glazed ceramics, not only academically but also practically and socially. The articles go beyond presenting typology and newly discovered material, offering a more holistic view of ceramic studies and attempting synthetic approaches.

Organized into five thematic sections, they take us from Portugal to Northern Russia and from Algeria to Palestine over a period covering fifteen centuries (from the 6th century AD to 1988). They address topics of typological evolution, dissemination and trade, ideological and political changes reflected in ceramics, ceramic materials and construction techniques, new methods of analysis and dating, and new online tools. They also present older and newer unpublished excavations and impressive shipwrecks.

Reading through the volumes reveals the significant progress made by the community of ceramologists in recent years towards a more substantial, more dynamic presence in all spatial and temporal contexts, from the early Middle Ages to modern times.
